Animals of All Regions
Of all living birds, the ostrich is the largest and heaviest. Unlike most birds, however, it cannot fly. Instead, these birds use their wings for stability and balance when they run, reaching up to speeds of 43 miles per hour. Ostriches also use their wings for displays of dominance/submission and for courtship. A flock of ostriches can range anywhere from 10 to 100 individuals.
The myth of ostriches burying their heads in sand stems from the fact that if an ostrich senses danger and cannot escape, it will lie on the ground, making sure to keep its head and neck flat on the ground.
