Sable Antelope

Hippotragus niger

Animals of Africa Back
The sable antelope is one of the most majestic antelopes. The male’s coats are a magnificent jet black, while the females are a rusty brown. They have large, semi-circular, ridged horns that curve backwards and can grow up to 65 inches in males and 40 inches in females. The horns are used to establish dominance within the antelope herd, as well as serve a great defense mechanism against predators. These animals stay close to a water source never travelling more than 2 miles from a watering hole or river.
